Over three decades after its opening, RTVE’s Territorial Center of Castilla-La Mancha underwent a full infrastructure upgrade. To celebrate the facility’s renovation and demonstrate the progress made in 5G and AI, two key initiatives supported by the Spanish government, the Center’s re-opening was broadcast live over a 5G network using TVU Networks’ ecosystem for video production and distribution.

RTVE is a public TV and radio broadcaster, with six TV channels and six radio stations, headquartered in Madrid.

For the production an ENG camera equipped with a TVU One 5G mobile transmitter, along with several 5G-enabled mobile devices with the TVU Anywhere live streaming app, were used to deliver high-quality, low latency video from the field. The TVU Anywhere app enables remote transmission of full-HD video.

Graphics, live narration, and pre-recorded video were mixed in the cloud, remotely using the TVU Producer live production platform. With the TVU Producer cloud-based production platform, users can create multi-camera, live streaming programs in minutes that include live audience interactions – with low latency.

Signals in each specific format for distribution to web, social networks and broadcast television were sent simultaneously over a private 5G network, provided by Telecom Castilla-La Mancha for television broadcast, signals from the re-opening event were sent to assigned decoders. For the website and RTVE’s YouTube channel, signals were sent via RTMP, and signals were sent directly to social networks. The re-opening live stream was also available on the RTVE corporate Intranet.

RTVE is well known for its pioneering use of 5G technology. The broadcaster has collaborated with many public and private institutions in its push to move the country forward in its adoption of 5G. In addition to TVU Networks, those partners include: RED.es, Telefónica, Vodafone, Orange, Telecom Castilla-La Mancha, Cellnex, and Polytechnic University of Valencia.

Based on its experience, RTVE believes that having a portable small-cell network enhances mobility, creating new opportunities to plan and execute 5G coverage – particularly for live events. The goal is to shape these technologies so that they can be integrated into everyday workflows and enable further progress in broadcast technology.
