TVU Networks Helps France Télévisions Get to the Heart of the Royal Wedding

TVU Networks enables live interviews from the crowds, bringing the atmosphere of celebration to television audiences in France

PARIS, FRANCE – May 30, 2018TVU Networks, the global technology and innovation leader in live IP video solutions, was chosen by France Télévisions to support its coverage of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday 19 May. Broadcast on France 2, franceinfo TV and Digital, the programme titled Speciale Mariage Princier made use of TVU Networks solutions to provide live interviews and reactions from the streets and bars in Windsor and London.

France Télévisions’ coverage included two live feeds, totalling seven hours of continuous content, sent back to the studio in Paris. The biggest challenge was to ensure reliable bandwidth while camera crews were constantly on the move over such a wide area. The broadcaster chose the mobile units TVU One and TVU NANO, TVU Networks’ new ultra-compact router to enable the two crews – one in a taxi and one on a motorbike – to capture and contribute the footage they needed without being encumbered by wires or heavy equipment.

“The aim was to do something innovative with our coverage by giving it a fresh twist. We wanted to deliver live reactions from the crowd in Windsor and London using a taxi and motorbike. We needed something powerful that was also small in size and very low weight for the motorbike crew,” explains Guy Lezec, Production Manager, France Télévisions.

“Our goal was to maintain optimal transmission quality despite significant mobility challenges and high network overhead in these circumstances. We had to boost our signal. TVU Network’s presentations at NAB Show 2018 of aggregated sim cards and TVU NANO appeared to respond to our needs perfectly,” added Romuald Rat, Director of News Coverage and Production, France Télévisions.

The first feed comprised live interviews from a taxi using two TVU One units; one to transmit the signal from three on-board cameras (including two Go Pros) and the other acting as a router. Also on board was a small production switcher. For the second live feed, a motorbike crew capturing live crowd reactions was equipped with a TVU One unit and the TVU NANO, again one to support transmission and the second acting as a router.

TVU One and TVU NANO deliver high-definition picture quality with industry leading bandwidth efficiency all within an ultra-compact and rugged hardware design. The highly portable units with one button operation and a boot-up time of less than 20 seconds, enabled the cameramen to hit the ground running, eliminating the need for lengthy set-up times.

Acting as an IP-based high-definition video field transmitter, TVU One gave France Télévisions the versatility needed for the live video contribution without having to compromise on performance, features or picture quality.

“We are very proud that our solutions were chosen by France Télévisions for such a prestigious event. The TVU One and NANO systems are ideal for a wide variety of scenarios, particularly application requiring dependable, high-speed bandwidth,” said Yoni Tayar, Europe Marketing Manager, TVU Networks. “The royal wedding is a perfect example of how effective our solutions can be in helping broadcasters innovate in live outside broadcast situations.”

TVU Networks has over 2,500 customers in more than 85 countries. The TVU Networks family of IP transmission and live production solutions gives broadcasters and organizations a powerful and reliable workflow to distribute live video content to broadcast, online and mobile platforms. TVU Networks to provide reliable equipment and top-tier connectivity throughout Russia for major international soccer tournament

Full rental package includes the TVU One transmitter for live streaming of video footage

BARCELONA, SPAIN – May 23, 2018 – TVU Networks, the global technology and innovation leader in live IP video solutions, today announced that it will provide rental packages and on-the-ground technical support throughout this summers’ international football tournament in all 12 Russian cities that will be hosting matches. The tournament will commence next month, with over 150 pieces of TVU Networks equipment and local SIM Cards already lined up to enable broadcasters to successfully deliver matches and tournament news to consumers across the globe.

Solutions hired will include the TVU One, which transmits signals over 3G, 4G/LTE wireless portable and fixed video transmitters. Small and lightweight, the portable solution for remote, anywhere live broadcast and streaming also incorporates TVU’s proprietary technology Inverse StatMux Plus (IS+). This secures bandwidth by transmitting the video signal over multiple channels simultaneously. This technology enables broadcasters of the tournament to guarantee their top-tier connectivity at the event by being able to push a larger amount of data over the network. This results in better picture signal and ultimately, higher picture quality for viewers.

Inverse StatMux Plus also combats network instability through intelligently monitoring each network connection in real-time, making corrections and adjustments as network conditions change. This is ideal for the broadcasters who want to ensure that relevant video footage of the tournament is delivered in high resolution with low latency to traditional television sets, laptops and mobile phones alike. Use of the HEVC/H.265 video compression standard also reduces video production costs as less data is used while shots are still of the highest quality.

“TVU Networks has the solutions required for live video broadcasting of high profile national and global events from sports tournaments through to coronations, natural disasters and elections,” explained Paul Shen, CEO, TVU Networks. “We are constantly looking for ways to help our customers reduce their video production costs while allowing them to deliver the best live shot regardless of the transmission environment. We’re excited to be part of this world-renowned sports event and look forward to supporting broadcasters using TVU equipment, whether owned or hired, at this event and many other international sport competitions in the future.“

TVU Networks staff will travel to each of the 12 venues in Russia to deliver, set up and test the equipment. Many customers have arranged to pick up their orders from registered venues, such as hotels, in Moscow where TVU’s logistics office is based.

TVU solutions are relied upon by many of the biggest names in sports to deliver live video to any sized audience to view on multiple broadcast and online platforms.

Denver 8 TV Uses TVU Networks to Live Stream Outdoor Concert Series to Television and Web Audiences

TVU One portable IP video transmitter delivers uninterrupted live broadcast despite inclement weather and low bandwidth connectivity

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA– May 23, 2018 – Denver 8 TV, the municipal access television station for the City and County of Denver, Colorado government, will resume broadcasting and live streaming its concert series, Live@Levitt, on June 1st, usingTVU Networks’ TVU One mobile IP transmitterto send live feeds from the Levitt Pavilion Denverto master control in Denver’s City Hall, which distributes the signals for live streaming and broadcast. A remote production control room at the back of the amphitheater switches the program, which is then fed into the TVU One and sent to TVU video receivers at City Hall for live broadcast on the Denver TV 8 Comcast channel and streamed to the website Denver8.tv.

The Pavilion lies within a natural bowl in the middle of Ruby Hill Park, which also has one of the highest elevation points in Denver. While the park offers 360-degree views of the mile-high city, it completely lacks Internet connectivity. Even the City and County of Denver’s own network that connects other outlying facilities doesn’t run close enough to provide a short extension to the venue.

In addition to the park’s lack of connectivity, part of it lies in a river valley. City Hall, the site of Denver 8 TV’s master control operation, is in the middle of the city, surrounded by tall buildings. Without line of sight, renting a microwave hop to broadcast these concerts is not possible. And renting a satellite uplink is cost prohibitive for this public organization.  The installation and monthly contract charges forecast by a local high-speed Internet provider attempting to connect the production to a network for a wired feed also proves far too costly for Denver TV 8.

The TVU One IP-based, portable transmitter was selected as a one-step solution for the city’s remote transmission needs. The TVU One is available with HEVC video compression and TVU’s patented Inverse Statmux Plus (IS+) transmission algorithm to transmit full HD quality video with half-second latency at 3Mbps. It’s available with embedded modems and can transmit simultaneously over multiple connections, including cellular, microwave, satellite, BGAN, WiFi and Ethernet.

Despite the park’s less-than-optimal transmission location and the stormy Denver summer evenings, there’s never been any service interruption with TVU One’s transmission. “We had a lot of rain storms last summer and never experienced one interruption in our transmission,” said Alan DeLollis, TV Communications & Video Operations Mgr., Marketing and Media Services, City & County of Denver. “Weather destroyed two audio boards and front-of-house tents were torn down by the wind and rain, but the TVU unit kept on working.”

DeLollis believes the unit brings more potential for collaboration between city agencies and as a pool feed shared to commercial networks and social media.  “We see our TVU One unit offering us the option to change the dynamic of how we deliver our production services to other city agencies and create a platform where community engagement in public outreach is much more possible,” said DeLollis. “The next step is using TVU One as an engagement and a sharing tool.”

The organization is discussing increasing coverage of live city events that can now, with TVU One, be distributed to others. That includes potentially creating a pool feed dedicated to City-related press conferences, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, etc. that can be shared with commercial media or live to social media.

“If they have a news hole, they could look to our feed and immediately have something to fill it,” explained DeLollis. “If something comes up that they’re modestly interested in, they’ll have our pool feed to use. It would also help them contain remote production costs. Our feed would show up on their TVU system, and they can choose to use it or not. It could provide the city a lot more exposure.”

Long Beach Yacht Club Premieres 360-Degree VR Livestream of 2018 Congressional Cup

Samsung 360 Round professional VR cameras and TVU Router provide high-end production quality and untethered, high-bandwidth IP connectivity for LBYC stadium match race event

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA– May 16, 2018 – Sailing fans all over the world viewed last month’s 2018 Congressional Cup regatta as it has never been seen before, courtesy of a partnership between the Long Beach Yacht Club’s(LBYC) media team and several technology firms, including TVU Networks, Samsung Electronics America, Telstra Broadcast Services, BOXX.TV, broadcast integration and project manager Suitelife Systems and wireless innovation house Ocon Solutions Company (OSC).

In its 54thconsecutive year the Congressional Cup is known in sailing circles as the ‘gateway to the America’s Cup, as it features the who’s who of match racing sailors. On two boats off Long Beach Veterans Memorial Pier, two TVU Routers served as sea-bound hot spots, sending 360-degree, live VR footage from two Samsung 360 Round VR cameras– one on a sports fishing boat and one on the anchored MV LOYNES LBYC race committee boat. The TVU Routers provided the high-bandwidth IP connectivitynecessary to send moving, high-data VR images from the water to the pier for VR post-production stitching and VR IP network distribution.

Two TVU Routers supplied the connection needed for the 360 Round VRcameras to provide live distribution to the Samsung VR Video website, https://samsungvr.com. The live video was also linked to the Congressional Cup web site, www.thecongressionalcup.com, and to the Tribeca Film Festival’s website.

TVU Router uses multiple data communication links simultaneously such as cellular 4G/LTE, Cable, DSL, Satellite, or WiFi to deliver a highly reliable broadband connection up to 200Mbps remotely. TVU Router can dynamically aggregate up to a dozen different data connections for maximum flexibility. It supports multiple 4G/LTE connections from different cellular providers to power even the most demanding and data-intensive applications anywhere.

“The VR wireless connectivity from the water back to the pier and the network streaming set up performed flawlessly thanks in large part to TVU Router,” said Geoffrey Talbot, Executive Producer of the five day live streaming TV production. “Integrating 360-degree footage requires an enormous amount of bandwidth. We couldn’t have done it without the rock-solid connectivity of our TVU Router, which performed above and beyond expectations from stationary and moving boats.

“We were excited to embrace the ground-breaking VR production values with our HD live streaming production, knowing it would generate enthusiasm with younger viewers around the world.  Truly, the backbone of this endeavor is stable, high-bandwidth connectivity from moving vehicles in literally any location,” said Talbot. “We believe that adding high-quality VR coverage and making that video accessible online will bring new generations to the sport.  We have to be able to transport all of this data-intensive video live and untethered.”

The Long Beach Yacht Club Media team produced five days of live broadcast quality coverage of the regatta including a Video over IP direct feed to the New York Yacht Club and worldwide distribution over social media. Ocon Solutions oversaw the wireless technical and production preparations for the 2018 Congressional Cup.

“VR footage requires extensive bandwidth to view the images properly,” said Jim Ocon, President, OSC. “With the lack of infrastructure on site, multiple sources of 360-degree VR coverage, and movement, this set up stretches the limits of high-bandwidth connectivity in a live, real-world environment. I knew if any technology was up to the feat, it would be TVU Router. It was designed specifically to address this type of application. We were particularly eager to show how the high-bandwidth IP connectivity of the TVU Router helped deliver Samsung 360 Round’s stunning VR imagery of the event. The end result was simply spectacular.”

“The producers of this event are merging the best of technology with the best of sports to bring sailing to viewers in a way they’ve never seen it before,” said Paul Shen, CEO, TVU Networks.  “We couldn’t be happier to be part of such a forward-thinking production.”
